Did you see BBC1's Easy ways to live well programme on Wednesday 22nd January? Hugh and Steph are looking for ways to help the staff at a Welsh Doctor's surgery stop their daytime snack cravings. Hugh's team discover the power of peppermint, and how the strong aroma of peppermint can suppress the urge to snack - psychologists say this is down to the theory of 'mutual competiton'. Hugh suggests sniffing peppermint oil every hour and drinking a cup of peppermint tea when you feel hungry. A 2011 study conducted by Bryan Raudenbush, a professor at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia, USA, found that individuals who inhaled peppermint every two hours were less hungry than those who did not, to the point where they consumed, on average over 1,500 fewer calories per week
